FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything you need to know about BytePad: the trial, licensing, updates, and features.

Getting started

How does the free trial work?

Download BytePad Pro and use every feature free for 14 days. No credit card, no account required. When the trial ends, enter a license key to keep using the app.

What is the difference between BytePad Pro and BytePad on the Mac App Store?

BytePad Pro, sold on this site with a 14-day free trial and a one-time license, is the full experience: it adds built-in Git source control, the integrated terminal, and the global show and hide hotkey. BytePad on the Mac App Store is the same beautiful editor, sandboxed for the App Store, without those developer power tools. See the full comparison.

What are the system requirements?

BytePad requires macOS 13.0 (Ventura) or later and runs natively on both Apple Silicon and Intel, with zero external dependencies. Apple Intelligence Writing Tools additionally require macOS 15.1 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled.

How do I get the App Store version?

Download BytePad directly from the Mac App Store. Just search for "BytePad" or follow the link on our website. Installation is instant and automatic, and your purchase is tied to your Apple ID, so no separate account is needed.

How do I activate my Pro license?

After purchasing, you'll receive a license key by email. Open BytePad Pro, go to the BytePad menu and choose "Manage License...", then paste your key and click Activate. That's it.

Licensing and pricing

Is this a subscription?

No. BytePad Pro is a one-time purchase of $9.99. You own your license forever and can use the app indefinitely. There are no recurring charges. The Mac App Store version is also a one-time purchase with no subscriptions or in-app recurring fees.

How many devices can I use?

Pro: each license can be activated on up to 2 Macs at the same time. You can deactivate a device and move the license to a new one anytime from your account portal. App Store: BytePad works on any Mac signed into your Apple ID, just like any other App Store purchase.

What happens if I get a new Mac?

Pro: log into your account at bytepad.app, remove the old device from your license, then activate on your new Mac. You can also deactivate from within the app on your old machine before switching. App Store: sign into the App Store with your Apple ID on your new Mac and re-download BytePad for free.

Can I get a refund?

Refunds for App Store purchases are handled by Apple. You can request a refund through Apple's Report a Problem page within a reasonable time after purchase. For Pro purchases, contact us and we'll help.

Updates and upgrades

How do updates work?

Pro: your purchase includes 1 year of free updates. During that year, every new version of BytePad Pro is yours automatically. You can check for updates from the BytePad menu inside the app. App Store: updates are delivered automatically through the Mac App Store at no extra cost, so you'll always have the latest version as long as automatic updates are enabled in your system settings.

What happens after my Pro update year expires?

Nothing changes with your current app. You can keep using the version you have forever: it won't stop working, lock features, or nag you.

If a newer version comes out after your update period and you want it, you can extend your updates for $7 for another full year. This is entirely optional.

How do I extend my updates?

You can extend directly from your account dashboard at bytepad.app. If your updates have expired, you'll see an "Extend Updates" button on your license card. You can also extend from inside the app when checking for updates. The extension costs $7 and gives you another year of access to all new releases.

Do I lose my license if I don't extend?

Absolutely not. Your license is permanent. The update extension only affects whether you can download versions released after your update period. The version you already have is yours to keep and use forever.

Features

What programming languages are supported?

BytePad 3.0 includes syntax highlighting with automatic detection for 19 languages, including Swift, Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, Rust, Go, C#, HTML, CSS, SQL, Shell, PowerShell, Perl, YAML, TOML, JSON, XML, GraphQL, and Dockerfile. There are also dedicated modes for Markdown, CSV, JSON, and plain text, plus a built-in PDF viewer.

Does it have built-in Git?

Yes, in BytePad Pro. Open any folder and BytePad finds the repo: a Source Control panel with one-click commit, Commit and Sync, a branch switcher in the status bar, and professional side-by-side diffs against HEAD with word-level highlighting. Git is exclusive to Pro and not included in the App Store version.

Does it have a built-in terminal?

Yes, in BytePad Pro. Version 3.0 ships a rebuilt, xterm-class terminal with 256 and true-color support, deep scrollback, and full-screen app support, so tools like vim and htop just work. It runs your default shell and opens in your project's directory. The App Store version does not include the terminal, so if you need one, choose BytePad Pro.

Can I preview Markdown files?

Yes. BytePad renders Markdown in real time with a side-by-side live preview, a formatting toolbar, and one-click export to PDF. It supports standard Markdown syntax including headings, lists, code blocks, tables, images, and links.

What about CSV files?

BytePad opens CSV files in a dedicated table editor where you can view, sort, and edit data in a spreadsheet-like grid. You can also switch back to raw text editing at any time.

Can it handle huge files?

Yes. Version 3.0 adds a large-file engine that opens huge logs and data files instantly, keeps typing latency flat, and lets you scroll and search millions of lines smoothly, all without slowing the rest of the app down.

Are there different themes?

BytePad 3.0 ships with 10 hand-tuned themes, including One Dark, Dracula, Nord, and GitHub alongside six originals. Every theme comes in a light and a dark variant, BytePad can follow the system automatically, and the entire window re-tints to match: sidebar, tabs, status bar, terminal, everything.

Does it work with Apple Intelligence?

Yes. Because BytePad is a true native editor, Apple Intelligence Writing Tools work out of the box: select any text and proofread, rewrite, or summarize it in place. Requires macOS 15.1 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled.
